Gandhi was the only name discussed when 18 opposition parties held a meeting in the Parliament to decide on their candidate for the vice presidential poll. All of them spoke in support of Gopal Gandhi and have made a decision to field him as a joint candidate.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi was the Left parties' choice for the Presidential polls too. Leaders from 18 Opposition parties met at the Parliament House and unanimously picked Gopalkrishna.
Mr. Yadav also said that the JD (U) remained "committed to Opposition unity" and that his party would back the Opposition candidate for Vice-President. It was learnt that there is a broad consensus on the person not being from the Congress camp after Meira Kumar's nomination as presidential candidate. "Eighteen parties have chose to field Gopal Krishna Gandhi as their Vice-Presidential candidate", Congress President Sonia Gandhi later told reporters.
The Opposition has chosen Gopalkrishna Gandhi as its nominee for the upcoming vice-presidential election, sources told PTI.
Married to Tara Gandhi and father of two daughters, he was earlier secretary to the Governor of Tamil Nadu, to the Vice President and to the President of India.
Among the leaders present on Tuesday included, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ghulam Nabi Azad, O'Brien (Trinamool), Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), Omar Abdullah (National Conference), former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, D Raja (CPI), Praful Patel (NCP), Jayprakash Narayan Yadav (RJD), Naresh Agarwal (SP), S C Mishra (BSP).
Polling for the vice-president's post will take place on 5 August if required.
