Richard Wagner, chief deputy of the St. Clair County, Ill., Sheriff's Dept., said there was nothing in Hodgkinson's record that would prevent him from legally owning firearms in IL.
The wife of James Hodgkinson, the gunman who shot Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and four others at a baseball field in Virginia Wednesday, said her husband had traveled to Washington, D.C.to "fix the tax system". The alleged shooter, identified by police as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was killed in a shootout with police Wednesday morning after shooting Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, Trent Franks of Arizona, and Mo Brooks of Alabama. After learning from Duncan that it was Republicans practicing on the field for the annual Congressional baseball game, Hodgkinson left to get his rifle, returned to the field, and opened fire.
Investigators said they have not found any evidence indicating Hodgkinson planned the attack.
"It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co.", it said.
"I was a little shocked out of all the cities in the United States it would be a little Midwest town like this", said Claire Hatch, a lifelong resident. He is still listed in critical condition.The statement noted that he has done better over the past 24 hours but will require further surgery and will stay in the hospital for some time.
Schaumleffel never actually knew Hodgkinson said now he'd never forget the day he was out there shooting.
Suzanne Hodgkinson told reporters gathered outside her Belleville home Thursday afternoon that she "couldn't believe it" when she heard about the shooting. It shows law enforcement officers moving around and firing at Hodgkinson in the distance.
News reports surfaced Thursday that a previous foster child of the Hodgkinson's had committed suicide by self-immolation and another child had been abused by Hodgkinson and taken away from him. Bost said that the Capitol was shaken after the shooting.
Back in IL at least one friend of Hodgkinson - who didn't give his full name - defended him, saying, "I just want to let people know he wasn't evil, that he was exhausted of some of the politics going on". Duncan said he told him it was Republicans. Our social media feeds are nothing but echo chambers to which we turn to instead of getting to know people who are different than we are in real life. He was living in his van and had a police record that included drunk driving, assault, and battery.
