Steve Scalise, R-La., and four others at a baseball field in Virginia Wednesday, said her husband had traveled to Washington, D.C.to "fix the tax system". The alleged shooter, identified by police as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was killed in a shootout with police Wednesday morning after shooting Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, Trent Franks of Arizona, and Mo Brooks of Alabama. After learning from Duncan that it was Republicans practicing on the field for the annual Congressional baseball game, Hodgkinson left to get his rifle, returned to the field, and opened fire.

Local media also unearthed a 2012 photo of Hodgkinson protesting outside a downtown Belleville post office holding a sign that read, "Tax the Rich".
