News outlets in California, North Carolina, Washington state, MI and MA have all announced that the fearmongering "March Against Sharia" will take place in major USA cities to highlight the danger that law-enforcement agencies, legal experts and religious groups say doesn't exist.
KIRO 7 News will be covering both events, which are scheduled to start at City Hall Plaza at 10 a.m. A Facebook page for the event says only 26 people plan to attend.
ACT said on its website that it canceled a March Against Sharia event in Arkansas after learning the local organizer had ties to white supremacist groups. ACT for America believes the Constitution is "under attack by Islamist groups due to the rise of Islamic immigration into our country" and pledges to "stand shoulder to shoulder with Israel".
The organization will host rallies in almost 30 cities across the U.S on Saturday in what it says is a fight against radical Islam and in particular, violence against women and honor killings. One of them was wearing a hijab.
The national coordinator of the marches, Scott Presler, is a 29-year-old Republican operative who says he, as a gay man, was first motivated to fight Muslim extremism after the deadly Orlando shooting last June. "We saw that in Portland and we think that's incredibly problematic", said Benton Strong, a spokesperson for Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. Numerous things that we hear of and abhor, such as an adulterer being stoned is not called for in the Quran.
Given the political and economic conflicts we had with a few nations including Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Iran, Afghanistan and other Muslim majority nations, we equated their practices like cutting the hands of the thieves, lashing or stoning the adulterers, forcing women to wear face veil and denying equal space for women as the crude form of Sharia.
The bill itself doesn't name the Sharia Law associated with Islam. It is created to guide devout Muslims in their personal and professional dealings. In other words, the very fear and loathing, xenophobia and nativism, prejudice and bigotry that are encouraged by events like this "March Against Sharia" help aggravate the climate that is already hostile to the country's tiny Muslim minority.
"This is a march against Sharia law and for human rights".
"There is no place for violence against women in society".
Given what happened in Portland when a recent pro-Trump "free speech" demonstration devolved into violence and resulted in 14 arrests, the Seattle Police Department said that it will have "the necessary staffing and equipment available" to ensure peace is kept.
As for Parish's assertion that Sharia can be separated from Muslim people, Bukhari responded, "We see bias in that". Abbas said. "We just want our basic rights".
Counter rallies have been announced in Syracuse and a number of other cities where ACT says it is holding rallies.
That march is scheduled for 9 a.m.in Occidental Park.
Supporters of an organization that's been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center will gather Saturday in downtown Seattle as part of a national "March Against Sharia".
