The overbearing feeling is that the BCCI is unhappy with Kumble over his role in negotiations for a pay hike for the players. With the term being one year, the procedure is being followed in the same manner. Such an approach, the official said, "had not gone down well" with the players who are used to a more relaxed dressing room.
With the deadline for applying for the post of India head coach coming to an end on May 31, rumours were rife as to who all were in the fray for the coveted yet high-pressure job.
Former Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar states that it's very hard for a coach and a captain to believe in same things in Cricketing matters.
"If you don't follow a process, it's not supposed to be good but if you follow a process, it's supposed to be good". Coach should be somebody who is good for Indian cricket. "I don't see any problem at all", he said. That is something the board has recognised.
The joint secretary said that the mood in the team is upbeat.
Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble of India warm up during net practice ahead of the final Test Match against England at the China Swamy Stadium in Bangalore, India. Ganguly, along with VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Sanjay Jagdale were a part of the selection committee that chose Kumble for the coach's job past year.
However, this time around the issue does not seem to be so open-and-shut, primarily considering the respect Kumble commands in Indian cricketing circles. But it was at the panel's insistence that he was put in. Ganguly, in fact, is in England as commentator, and might get involved sometime during the course of tournament.
Questions are also being raised as to whether Kumble, an Indian cricketing legend, will be again taking part in the interview process despite his stupendous record, after what all has transpired in the past 72 hours. "He should have a vision for Indian cricket which would carry Indian cricket forward for the next 8 to 10 years", Gavaskar said. "I am simply going by the results and when you go by the results of previous year, you can say he has done nothing wrong", said Gavaskar, the first batsman to breach the 10,000-run mark in Tests. Kumble might not be holding the steering wheel anymore.
